Shellbark Hickory (Carya laciniosa) seedlings can grow up to 100 foot tall, produce the largest nuts of other Carya species, and can live up to 200 years. They provide habitat and food for a number of animals and the wood has wonderful uses, including for cooking with!  Similar to the large Shagbark Hickories, the bark of these trees creates shaggy plates that look like they are peeling off as the trees mature. Overall, they a wonderful tree for the landscape, the forest, the hedgerows or orchard.

Hardiness Zones: 4 (but needs zone 5 to produce nuts)

 

Pollination: Self fertile, but produces better with 2 or more trees
