Buy Canadian = Support Migrants
There is a lot of uncertainty happening these days. My jaw gets extra tight when I hear our politicians speaking about how these tariffs are going to cause some of the most challenging moments of our time.
I've been appreciating all of the reminders of how community can stand together in local mutual aid, inter-provincial partnership, and international solidarity. The reminders help me to loosen my jaw and remind myself of the deeply caring part of humanity that always exists. They remind me to be aware of narratives that continue the scapegoating of certain community members, especially in moments of chaos.
So this is a reminder to us all that, as we collectively teeter-totter closer to "buying local" in another moment of crisis, we need to remind ourselves that Buy Canadian = Support Migrants. "Buying Canadian means standing with the workers who grow and prepare our food" - @migrantrightsca
I see a lot of fellow farmers and farm workers and eaters encouraging the shift towards buying Canadian. Great, we need that social narrative, always. Let's also spread the reality that a just food system needs to acknowledge and protect the rights of migrant farm workers who are a major part of what makes Canada.
At the @nfucanada convention, @gallahdua4771Â shared the "Challenges faced by migrant workers in low-wage sectors." Scroll down to see the farmworker exemptions in Employment Standards and Labour Relations legislation in provinces...
Spread the word by learning about and talking about this important piece of the social movement for food sovereignty and migrant rights. Spread this to your story if you want.

In NS, the @ns.nfu, of which we are members, is increasing our partnership with @migrantworkerrights_ns. Check out their Solidarity Event in Kentville on Feb 9th. I'll be there Â

Tell your migrant farm worker buds that the @nfucanada has a farm worker membership and that they can be part of the farmer/farmworker-led advocacy for a just food system.
